Revolut Outage Traced to Google Cloud Power Event in London

Executive Summary

A Revolut outage on 20 October 2026 left customers across Europe unable to sign in, pay by card or move money for several hours. Google Cloud said a power event caused an outage in its europe-west2-b zone in London from 06:08 UTC (08:08 Swedish time). Revolut later blamed the Google Cloud incident and said services were restored the same day. The company said customers’ money and data stayed safe throughout. Neither company has said how many customers were affected. Google Cloud is one of 19 providers EU supervisors designated as critical under DORA in November 2025. That puts the failure inside the EU’s new oversight of cloud dependencies in finance.

Revolut Outage Began With a Power Fault in London

Google’s status dashboard dates the start to 23:08 Pacific time on 19 October which was early morning on the 20th in Europe. The stated cause, “Due to a power event we had suffered an outage within europe-west2-b zone. The power event is mitigated.” Europe-west2 is Google Cloud’s London region. A zone is one isolated location inside a region. London has three; europe-west2-a, -b and -c, as Google’s own incident records show. Google said services in the b zone were unavailable while services elsewhere in the region could see elevated errors and intermittent network problems. It hasn’t reported impact outside London.

Revolut posted its first statement while the fault was live, “We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services. We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe.” Its status page listed sign-in, card payments, transfers, ATM withdrawals, currency exchange and stock trading as unavailable or partly unavailable. Swedish customers were hit as well, according to a published report.

Later that day Revolut named the cause. “Due to a recent Google Cloud outage, customers may have experienced temporary service disruption on the Revolut app today,” it wrote, adding that services were back.

Revolut’s Own Report Listed Power Failure as a Risk

The 2024 management report of Revolut Holdings Europe UAB, signed on 25 April 2025, says some disruptions can come from outside the group’s control and names a cyberattack or a wider telecommunications or power failure as examples. It says the group keeps business continuity and disaster recovery plans that are tested regularly. Outsourcing, third-party risk and technology availability are among the areas where it was strengthening controls. The report does not say which cloud regions or zones Revolut uses.

Revolut hasn’t said whether the affected systems ran in one zone or several.

Europe-West2 Has Failed Before

Google’s incident archive shows earlier physical faults in the same region. On 19 July 2022 several redundant cooling systems failed at once in a data centre hosting europe-west2-a. On 12 August 2024 a power loss caused 40 minutes of connectivity problems across europe-west2. A power failure in one Frankfurt data centre on 23 October 2024 hit the europe-west3-c zone for 7 hours and 39 minutes.

Where DORA Comes In

Google Cloud EMEA Limited was among 19 critical ICT third-party providers the European Supervisory Authorities designated on 18 November 2025, a status Google confirms. Designation brings direct oversight by the ESAs. Revolut Bank UAB, a Lithuanian-licensed credit institution, offers deposits in 30 countries in the EEA and Switzerland according to the 2024 report. It falls under DORA’s incident rules: a major ICT-related incident needs an initial notification within four hours of being classified as major and no later than 24 hours after the firm became aware of it, as Austria’s Financial Market Authority sets out. Revolut hasn’t said whether it classified this outage as major. As of 21 October, CERT-SE had published nothing on it.

A Risk on Paper Became One Zone’s Outage

Revolut’s EEA report named power failure as a disruption beyond its control and described continuity plans tested regularly. Google’s status entry confines the power fault behind the Revolut outage to one of three London zones. Sign-in, cards and transfers still failed together. Revolut has not explained why losing one zone took all of them down or whether it filed a major-incident notification with the Bank of Lithuania.
